FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long is the time commitment for hosting?  We ask that families commit to hosting for about 2.5 weeks in June or July.  Two scholars stay in each household.  We can be flexible if scheduling is a concern or if scheduling conflicts arise.

What if I don't have much space? The scholars usually prefer to be in the same room.  One bedroom or area of the house works well.

What will I need to provide in terms of food?  We ask host families to supply breakfast, a packed lunch, and dinner each day.  We will give you a "starter kit" of food, along with suggestions for meals.  The scholars are eager to share in cooking duties and usually love to cook a West African dish for the family.

Do I need to be at home during the weekdays in order to host? No, you don't need to be at home during the day.  Our scholars leave the house in the morning and take public transportation to our leadership classes each weekday.  Their schedule runs from 9-5 each weekday.  In addition, we have outings each Saturday and on one weeknight.  Host families are welcome to join but don't need to.  Sundays are a day to spend with host families, and 4 out of the 5 weeknights as well.
